New York City, or NYC, is known for its many names such as the “Big Apple” and the City “That Never Sleeps.” We can safely say it is the most popular city globally because, after all, almost everyone can recognize its majestic skyline and iconic sights, like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.About New York
Did you know that NYC was once known as New Amsterdam and New Orange since it was once a Dutch Colony? Today, it has grown far beyond its Dutch origins and has become a multicultural hub, being home to millions of people of different ethnicities. Immigrants from Europe and worldwide flocked to the city in the 19th and 20th centuries with the Statue of Liberty greeting them upon arrival. This is evident today in its street names and restaurants serving a cacophony of food selections.
Its five boroughs are Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. All of which are home to countless landmarks millions of tourists flock to every single year.
Sights and sites
New York City is home to many of the world’s most recognizable sights. Apart from the Statue of Liberty, you’ll also get to see the Empire State Building and Central Park, the green spot amidst the concrete jungle. Moreover, you can also visit Times Square, which is featured in almost every New York-based movie or series and the adjacent Broadway street, the Rockefeller Center, and the New One World Trade Center.
Apart from its “traditional” destinations, there’s also the Headquarters of the United Nations, the New York Harbor, and the Bronx Zoo.
Things to do
You can do countless things in New York, and we’re sure spending a week there won’t be enough. Regardless, if you’re planning to add entries to your itinerary, we recommend:
- Taking a cruise on the Hudson River to see the Statue of Liberty up close
- Watching one of the Broadway shows. (Note: even if you’re not interested in theater, you have to do it)
- Strolling in Central Park
- Taking a tour inside the Rockefeller Center to see the entirety of New York
- Visiting the United Nations Headquarters to see the Assembly Hall and artifacts from around the world
- Photo ops in Times Square
Getting around
NYC is home to several airports, like the iconic JFK International Airport. Getting around the city may take a lot of effort due to its highly populated and congested roads. Nevertheless, you’ll have two primary options, including its subway system and the yellow metered cabs around the city. If you’d like a more scenic experience, we recommend taking a horse carriage ride around Central Park.
What to eat
Food is plenty in NYC, and you’ll have lots of options. Home to millions of immigrants, you can easily find restaurants serving cuisine from around the world. We highly recommend taking a taste of the city’s pizzas (popularized by its Italian immigrants), its breakfast staple bagels, and coffee. Moreover, it’s also a good idea to get food on the go when you’re taking a stroll, which is why it’s a must to buy hotdogs and ice cream sandwiches from food trucks.
Overall
Visiting NYC should be part of everyone’s bucket list. This great American city has a lot to offer, from its easily recognizable sights, towering buildings, historical sites, and cultural elements. In any case, we’re sure you won’t regret visiting “the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.”
